Statement from Felipe Benitez, Executive Director & Founder of Corazón Latino, on the Nomination Hearings of Julie Su as U.S. Secretary of Labor
“Today marks an important milestone as Julie Su has her nomination hearing to serve as the U.S. Secretary of Labor. We at Corazón Latino are excited to witness this significant moment for workers from around the country, especially in the regions we serve, including Arizona, California, West Virginia, Puerto Rico, and the East Coast.
Julie Su has a proven track record of working across the aisle, engaging with the business community and organized labor, and delivering strong results for the American economy while ensuring the protection of our precious Madre Tierra. Her unanimous confirmation as Deputy Secretary of Labor by all Senate Democrats speaks volumes about her qualifications and dedication to this role.
Julie Su’s nomination has been endorsed by a range of business groups, including Small Business Majority and the LA Chamber of Commerce, as well as labor leaders from the AFL-CIO, NABTU, LiUNA, and United Mineworkers. These endorsements reflect her ability to create a pro-business, pro-worker, and environmentally-conscious Cabinet, as she consistently collaborates with her counterparts at the Departments of Commerce, Energy, and more on issues crucial to businesses large and small.
In her role as Marty Walsh's right-hand, Ms. Su has helped produce historic job growth and averted a major rail shutdown last year, ensuring business and labor continued to work together to reach an agreement approved by Congress, all while keeping the well-being of our planet in mind.
Stalling a history-making nominee like Ms. Su, who is ready to hit the ground running and work with all sides to support both our economy and environment, would be detrimental. Julie's qualifications and track record demonstrate that any doubts about her ability to get the job done are unfounded. We at Corazón Latino are confident in Julie Su’s confirmation process and look forward to seeing her excel as the U.S. Secretary of Labor, championing workers' rights and the protection of our Madre Tierra.”
