Descubre el Bosque

This Spanish-language strategic communications and grassroots program, supported by the U.S Forest Service, is designed to generate conversations around access and exposure to public lands, health and well-being through nature-based connections, and opportunities to become engaged in natural resource conservation. This initiative seeks to engage Spanish-speaking audiences in the U.S., Latin America, and around the world, through the creation of culturally and linguistically relevant content that is disseminated utilizing social media, digital platforms, traditional media, community events and stakeholder engagement.

Forest Health and Human Health

This program seeks to bring attention and activate communities to the fact that the health of both urban and rural forests impacts population health. The protection and conservation of our forests and green spaces are critical to improving the health of communities, particularly those suffering from health disparities.

redescubre el Yunque: Puerto Rico

Corazón Latino is dedicated to environmental education, disaster response, and community forestry in Puerto Rico. A cornerstone of our work is Redescubre El Yunque, the first citizen science program in El Yunque National Forest, which engages local communities in forest conservation and data collection. In close collaboration with teachers, we also developed a conservation education curriculum for El Yunque, formally adopted by the Puerto Rico Department of Education and reaching over 20,000 students across the island. These initiatives foster a deep connection to Puerto Rico's only tropical rainforest, emphasizing its importance for environmental resilience and community health.

Woodsy Owl Conservation Corps Grassroots Network

The Woodsy Owl Conservation Corps (WOCC) is a youth initiative created and managed by the USDA Forest Service Conservation Education unit in partnership with Corazón Latino. WOCC educates and motivates youth to take proactive action for conservation. These opportunities include leadership skills, community outreach and engagement, water conservation, wildfire prevention, climate education, and many more. Participating communities can utilize the Woodsy Owl icon to engage families, schools, faith-based organizations, grassroots organizations and other groups that have been historically underrepresented in the outdoors and in conservation-related decision-making processes.

Woodsy Owl’s phrases unify conservation messages through popularity and can transcend generations:

  • Lend a Hand - Care for the Land!

  • Give a Hoot, Don’t Pollute!

  • Be Climate Wise!

  • Woodsy’s Four R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot

Current units are located in Puerto Rico, Arizona, West Virginia, Utah, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C.

Ocean conservation

Corazón Latino is a recognized force in coastal conservation, with extensive experience spanning five years. We've effectively managed numerous clean-up and restoration initiatives in Puerto Rico's Northeastern Ecological Corridor. In the Chesapeake Bay region, our robust training program has enriched over 500 land managers and conservationists with community engagement skills. We've also successfully validated the Packard Foundation's research "Heart wired to Love the Ocean" among diverse Latino communities, underlining the importance of culturally resonant environmental efforts. Our work embodies a unifying approach, intertwining conservation science, cultural relevance, community engagement, and education to foster resilient communities and ecosystems.
