Introducing the A Tempo String Orchestra and Corazones Rítmicos Music Program: Transforming Lives Through the Power of Music
Dear Corazón Latino familia,
I am thrilled to announce the launch of our latest initiative, the A Tempo String Orchestra and Corazones Rítmicos Music Program, in partnership with our arts engagement program, Heart Theatre | Teatro del Corazón and A Tempo Music Academy. This groundbreaking program aims to transform the lives of low-income, at-risk children and their families from BIPOC communities in the Washington DC Metropolitan area, using the incredible power of music education.
As the late Maestro José Antonio Abreu, founder of the world-renowned El Sistema program in Venezuela, once said, "Music has to be recognized as an…agent of social development in the highest sense, because it transmits the highest values - solidarity, harmony, mutual compassion. And it has the ability to unite an entire community and to express sublime feelings." We wholeheartedly believe in this vision, and it is our mission to bring this transformative power to our community.
In the first year, we aim to serve over 250 children, with plans to travel with an ensemble to perform in 2024 at the prestigious Biennale di Venezia. This incredible opportunity will not only showcase their talents but also serve as a testament to the life-changing impact of our program.
Under the expert guidance of my dear friend, Maestro Dietrich Paredes, a renowned conductor and disciple of Maestro Abreu, the A Tempo String Orchestra and Corazones Rítmicos Music Program will provide high-quality music education and artistic opportunities to children and young people from underserved communities in Washington DC and beyond. Our program is designed to instill a love for music and empower participants to overcome challenges, build character, and develop essential life skills.
Maestro Paredes' extensive international experience as a conductor and educator, including his work with numerous youth orchestras around the world, has prepared him well for this new venture. He was also the music teacher of my son, Alejandro, during the COVID-19 pandemic. His teaching, music, and joy were a light during those difficult times, as Alejandro took online lessons with him. I must confess that I oftentimes stopped my day and joined his music theory and music appreciation lessons next to my son, feeling inspired and uplifted by the experience.
By engaging at-risk youth from diverse backgrounds, we hope not only to develop their musical talents but also to inspire them to build a brighter future for themselves and their communities. We believe that music education can be a catalyst for positive change, fostering resilience, unity, and personal growth among its participants.
As the Executive Director and Founder of Corazón Latino, I am excited about the incredible impact this program will have on the lives of its participants and their families. We look forward to sharing our journey with you and witnessing the transformative power of music in action.
I invite you to join us in this effort by providing financial support to help us reach even more children and transform their lives through the power of music.
Thank you for your continued support, and stay tuned for more updates on the A Tempo String Orchestra and Corazones Rítmicos Music Program.
With gratitude and excitement y con mucho, mucho amor,
Felipe Benitez
