Corazón Latino Commends President Biden’s Puerto Rico Strategy

The organization commends President Biden’s long-term commitment to the island, yet recognizes critical needs that require immediate action

Washington, D.C. – President Biden visited Puerto Rico to assess the damage from Hurricane Fiona and also announced a new initiative to strengthen the island’s electric grid and to make decisive progress on clean energy transformation. Biden highlighted the $60 million in funding that was earmarked for Puerto Rico through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law last year, which will be used to shore up levees, strengthen flood walls, and create a new flood warning system.

Executive Director of Corazón Latino, Felipe Benitez, issued the following statement:

“Puerto Rico has not yet healed from the impact of Hurricane Maria five years ago that destroyed the electrical system and killed over 3,000 people. Now, Hurricane Fiona is adding compounded stress to a still fragile situation. We are tremendously grateful for President Biden’s long-term commitment to Puerto Rico, and the steps he’s taken today to mend and restore Puerto Rico’s untended needs on the island that have festered for so long.

“The Biden administration has been greatly supportive to our brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico. While we commend the administration for their groundbreaking steps, we still call for immediate emergency assistance to help those on the ground. In the meantime, Corazón Latino is raising funds to support immediate needs on the island.”
