Corazón Latino Commends the Department of Interior on $1.6 Billion Investment in Public Lands and Tribal Schools

“This historic investment will generate jobs and boost local economies while helping address a multi-billion-dollar deferred maintenance backlog at national parks, public lands, and at tribal schools.

Washington, D.C., April 3, 2021 – Felipe Benítez, Executive Director of Corazón Latino, a national environmental justice and conservation organization with a strong presence in the Northeast, Southwest, and in Puerto Rico, issued the following statement on the recent announcement of $1.6 billion in 2021 to address critical deferred maintenance projects and improve transportation and recreation infrastructure in national parks, national wildlife refuges and recreation areas, and at Bureau of Indian Education schools.

“Corazón Latino commends the announcement of $1.6 billion directed to many of our nation’s national treasures as well as Bureau of Indian Education-funded schools.

“This historic investment will generate jobs and boost local economies while helping address a multi-billion-dollar deferred maintenance backlog at national parks, public lands, and at tribal schools.

“These resources also represent a great opportunity to make the necessary investments in assuring that our nation’s public lands become more accessible to all individuals, families, and communities, particularly those who have been historically excluded.”
