Corazón Latino Hosts Grammy Award-winning Artist and Activist Lila Downs in a Día De Muertos and Conservation Celebration

The virtual concert kicks off the annual #Batweek celebration and the lead up to Election Day in the U.S.

Oaxaca, Mexico – This Friday, Corazón Latino will team up with Mexican singer-songwriter and actress Lila Downs to celebrate Día de los Muertos and Batweek virtually from Oaxaca, Mexico.

Lila Downs, one of the most influential artists in Latin America and the world is a Grammy-award and Latin Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter. Downs is known for her storytelling musical approach, powerful voice and blending musical genres alongside social justice-focused lyrics.

Friday’s show will celebrate Tradición, Cultura y Conservación – tradition, culture, conservation, and bats, a mighty pollinator and to protect our Mother Earth. The concert will feature her all-time favorite songs, like Paloma Negra, as well as cultural segments by Downs, narrated in Spanish, that highlight traditions, food, and cultura from her homelands of Oaxaca. It kicks off at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT Friday and will be streamed on Corazón Latino’s YouTube and Facebook pages.

Batweek runs October 24 to 31st. Worldwide, over 500 flower species from over 65 plant families—including the agave plant, a key ingredient for tequila and mezcal —mainly rely on bats as their pollinators. The Mexican long-nosed bats are primarily responsible for pollinating Agave plants, which originate from Mexico. They then migrate north a thousand miles or more every spring, from Mexico into Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.

The concert will also serve as a reminder for U.S. Latino voters to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming election.

“Lila’s music and her deep love of Madre Tierra and dedication to protecting its people is inspiring. She offers us the soundtrack to pay homage to our loved ones lost and to those who have passed away from Covid-19 this year,” said Felipe Benitez, Executive Director of Corazón Latino, a national non-profit organization that seeks to generate social, environmental, and conservation initiatives that foster natural resource stewardship.

“It is an honor to partner with Corazón Latino to virtually present my performance from the Teatro Macedonio Alcalá in Oaxaca, for my fans in the United States and internationally. We must stand with the environment in the upcoming U.S. elections and remind Latinos to get out and vote,” said Lila Downs, an international singer-songwriter and environmental activist.
