Lexington, Jackson Hole, Washington, D.C., California, and Nicaragua: A busy week for Corazón Latino

Last week, Corazón Latino had a pretty busy week. We were (literally) all over the place. Here’s a brief summary of our work:

October 16-18, Corazon Latino team participated in the North American Association of Environmental Education Annual Meeting in Lexington, KY. We delivered two presentations and a poster session.

  • Engaging Latino Communities in Conservation Topics (15 min session)

  • Connecting Diverse Communities with Nature (45 min session)

  • EYNF Citizen Science poster session

Concurrently, Corazón Latino participated in the 2019 SHIFT Conference: Nature as Medicine: The Business Case.

  • Corazón Latino received SHIFT Awards Official Selection/Non Profit recognition.

  • CL, Executive Director, Felipe Benitez, served as a panelist and led a work cafe dynamic during a session entitled Access For All.

On October 19 and 20, Corazón Latino participated in two DC/MD events:

  • Mundo Verde Public Charter School's Environmental Fall Festival. Please note that Corazón Latino through a grant from NEEF provided support for the school to create a pollinator garden and to launch a bilingual engagement project for the community in the Spring.

  • Staff participated in the Maryland Multicultural Youth Center October Festival, where we shared conservation education messages with the Maryland Latino community.

In Nicaragua, in partnership USDA Forest Service International Institute of Tropical Forestry and SETNET Communications, we co-hosted a bird watching walk/overnight camping trip in the La Makina Reserve to celebrate the eBird Global Big Day.

On October 21, Corazón Latino co-hosted a community town hall meeting in Fillmore, CA, to discuss concrete actions for Latino communities to engage in clean air, clean water and health and nature efforts. The event was co-hosted by the League of United Latin American Citizens, Californians for Pesticide Reform, EarthJustice, Environmental Defense Fund, GreenLatinos, One Step A La Vez, and Santa Paula Latino Town Hall.
