Importance of COVID Vaccination:
COVID continues to pose a significant threat to people in Florida. While many individuals experience mild cases, COVID can also cause severe illness and death. In the United States, millions have been hospitalized, and over a million lives have been lost to COVID. Those at increased risk for severe illness include individuals 50 and older, people with underlying medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and obesity, and pregnant or recently pregnant individuals. Even mild cases of COVID can result in long-term health problems, including damage to vital organs. Vaccination offers the best protection against severe outcomes from COVID, including the Omicron variant.
Who Should Get Vaccinated:
It is recommended that everyone aged 6 months or older receives a COVID vaccine. To achieve the highest level of protection, individuals should complete all recommended doses based on their age.
About the Updated Vaccines:
Updated COVID vaccines are now available to help protect against the Omicron variant, which is causing the majority of new COVID infections in the United States. These updated vaccines are "bivalent," providing protection against the original virus that causes COVID while offering targeted protection against Omicron. The FDA and CDC now recommend updated COVID vaccines for those who have not yet been vaccinated. For individuals who were previously vaccinated, an updated COVID vaccine restores protection against severe COVID-related illness, hospitalization, and death that may fade over time.
When Adults Should Get an Updated Vaccine:
Adults aged 18 or older who have not yet received a COVID vaccine should get an updated vaccine now. Additionally, those aged 18 or older who were previously vaccinated and received their last dose before September 2022 should also get an updated vaccine. Individuals who recently had COVID should wait three months from their illness before getting the updated vaccine. For individuals aged 65 and older, a second updated COVID vaccine can be obtained four months after their first dose. Those with compromised immune systems can receive a second updated COVID vaccine two months after their first dose, with further doses recommended by their healthcare provider.
When Children Should Get an Updated Vaccine:
Children should receive an updated COVID vaccine now if they fall into the following categories:
Aged 6-17 years who have not yet received a COVID vaccine.
Aged 12-17 years who received a Pfizer-BioNTech or Novavax vaccine, and their last dose was before September 2022.
Aged 6-17 years who received a Moderna vaccine, and their last dose was before October 2022.
Aged 5-11 years who received a Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, and their last dose was before October 2022.
Aged 6 months - 5 years who received a Moderna vaccine, and their last dose was before December 2022.
Aged 6 months - 4 years who received a Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine
