More than 373 thousand people have been affected by hurricane ETA as of November 12, 2020
— According to the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction of Guatemala (CONRED)

State of facts

On November 6 of this year the State of Public Calamity was declared in the departments of Petén, Quiché, Alta Verapaz, Izabal, Chiquimula, Zacapa, Jutiapa, El Progreso, Santa Rosa and Huehuetenango due to the hurricane ETA. This natural disaster has caused extensive damage and caused material loss and human loss in Guatemala, specifically concentrated in the areas mentioned above.

The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology of Guatemala (INSIVUMEH) reports that hurricane ETA no longer represents a direct danger to Guatemala. However, it has had an unprecedented impact on the country, having numbers of approximately 363,495 people affected. In addition, there is a very high risk on food security for the country. Since 31,520.57 hectares have been lost as a result of this hurricane.

The objectives pursued from this call are the following:

  1. Within the impacted departments, to keep and to serve as a priority to their affected population. So we can respond to their immediate needs and initiate the early recovery and reconstruction phase

  2. To call on the International Community to join national efforts in order to attend to emergencies, early rehabilitation, and reconstruction of the affected areas in health, water and sanitation, food security, infrastructure and housing.

National response capacity has been exceeded as of November 11, 2020
— According to Óscar Cossio, Executive Secretary of CONRED

Despite the decrease in winds and their intensity, national risk management authorities and humanitarian partners fear the possible negative effects of constant rains. This will increase the risk for new floods and mudslides, considering the mountainous elevations found in the path of Eta.

Also noteworthy is the factor of environmental destruction. These natural disaster events tend to spread contamination of sewage, oil, and gasoline. These highly polluting fluids, including micro plastics and garbage, are potential drain blockers and cause more flooding and consequently seeing the most extensive impact.

According to CONRED, these are the most urgent needs for Humanitarian Assistance
